Yeelen Art Gallery

Miami, FL

December 05, 2015

Yeelen Gallery is off the beaten path in comparison to most of the Art Week Miami events, but it was a necessary excursion to Little Haiti to attend their annual Art Basel event. 1) Because I’d visited in the Spring and it was my first introduction to the work of Tim Okamura. It was love at first sight; and 2) because my friend Dana was the subject of a (beautiful) portrait by Jerome Soimaud. I had to see it in person :-)

This time around, Yeelen’s exhibition was “What’s Inside Her Never Dies…”, a celebration of “the legacy and influence of the Black Woman.” I was particularly interested in Sylvia Maier’s portraits of the mothers of Black men who have been killed by police, including Sybrina Fulton, Kadiatou Diallo and Valerie Bell.  There were several other offerings that caught my eye as well. You can check out my favorites in the gallery.

Also, the exhibition is on display thru Feb. 28, 2015. Check out Yeelen Art for more information.
