I Went to See Black Panther 3x and This Is What I Thought

February 19, 2018

Danai calls to tell the men there is a problem.

I love the portrayal of black women in this film. Like they are the brains of the operation and the protectors of the realm. You got Danai and the Dora Mijale. The High Council got lady elders. Lupita is out there saving the world and women. Little Sis is fueling the technology.

Wakanda is the most advanced nation on earth for many reasons. There's the virbranium, of course. And they've never been colonized so  their best resources, including people, weren't stolen and they don't  get the inferiority complex that comes with being subjugated, but on top of all of that, they are winning because the entire population is allowed to operate at their full potential. You create a society where half of the population are given agency, allowed equal seats at the table, and encouraged to thrive and you end up with a really dope place, you end up with Paradise.

Someone get Dap Dunlap on the bullhorn and tell him to wake the people up.

NETFLIX REACTION: OITNB: Season 5

June 13, 2017

*SPOILER ALERT*

*SPOILER ALERT*

*SPOILER ALERT*

I just wrapped S5. I have thoughts. So, so many thoughts.

PLEASE NOTE: This “reaction” is only for folks who have watched the entire season. If you’re trying to keep up with the storyline, it won’t happen here. This is not a traditional recap.

This whole, long season picks up right where it left off a year ago. We cover 4-5 days in Litchfield where a riot/rebellion is taking place in the aftermath of Poussey’s death. It’s an interesting, if surreal, angle: what happens when the inmates take over the prison?

A lot. A whole lot. Some I was pleased with (like the guard who did the strip tease), a lot I was “meh” about, but all in all it held my attention long enough to make it thru the whole season in its opening weekend.

So like I said, some thoughts:

Because OITNB has a million characters, I’m only mentioning the ones that actually stood out to me.

Um... how do I say this right? I don't much care about any of the storylines that don't involve brown people. And that's not me being racist. I watch white people's stories all the time. Just none of stories from the white characters pulled me in this season. The saga of the bunker? Meh. Morello being preggers? Meh. Though she did get a rise out of me when she took Suzanne off her meds. I was PISSED. Red being humiliated? Sad, because I like Red and she’s an old lady, but still Meh. The two meth heads? Meh. Pensatucky? Meh. Nicky? Nice makeover, but meh. The MCC chick masquerading as an inmate Interesting twist, but still meh. Boo? Meh. The fake Martha Stewart? Didn’t care at all. Alex and Piper's engagement? Gigantic and consistent meh. I did feel bad for the lady who found out her dude had moved on via Instagram.

ESSENCE.com-- 'The Bachelorette' Recap EP. 2 : Let The 'Husband Material' Games Begin!

May 30, 2017

Rachel Lindsay is “wife material”, she emphatically states at the beginning of the latest episode of The Bachelorette, the second of the season. And she is only looking for “husband material”, which she says 50-11 times.

This week, her hunt begins with a group date. Rachel and eight eager-to-please guys are met by Hollywood couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, who say they are huge fans of The Bachelorette. They introduce the men to the Husband Material Challenge, an obstacle course where the guys will compete to change the dirty diaper of a fake baby, vacuum with said baby strapped to their chest, and set a kitchen table properly. Clearly the bar for what constitutes husband material is low, but this would make a great game at a baby shower.

The winner of said challenge is Lucas aka Whaboom aka the guy that everyone, except for Rachel, hates. To celebrate his win, Lucas spikes the plastic baby onto the ground like it’s a football. His athletic prowess guarantees him one-on-one time with Rachel where he reads her a poem and comes across surprisingly likeable. I still wouldn’t consider him husband material. And I still want him out of the house, but he’s not as bad as everyone thought last week.

Also, Lucas is no longer my least favorite person in the house. That distinction would belong to Blake, who is a dry snitch. It turns out, Blake and Lucas have history as Blake once lived with Lucas’s ex. It’s unclear if the ex was a roommate or a lover, or both. Blake believes Lucas has ill-intent and he feels so strongly about it that he spends his one-on-one time with Rachel spilling weak tea on Lucas.

The other guys get their time with Rachel too and most are equally unimpressive. There’s one guy talking to Rachel about hacks to change a diaper. Really? This is how you woo a woman? Kenny, the really cute pro wrestler, who I really want to like, goes on and on about his daughter. He seems wholesome, but not romantic. Rachel says as much about the guys, in general. She’s bored… until Dean comes along.

I planned to recap. I can’t. I yelled when Randall and Beth bumped. Like a deep guttural yell. Then tears everywhere. Something about teenage Beth triggered TF out of me. Was on the verge of tears all episode, and when it unleashed.... *heavy sigh* Please. Talk amongst yourselves. I am inconsolable. I haven’t cried like this since William died. I am a mess. #thisisus
Dear Demetria: “My fiancé doesn’t acknowledge our relationship on FB, and doesn’t want to change his relationship status after the wedding.” • 👩🏾💍 + 🤵🏽🤐= 🤦🏾‍♀️+🤷🏾‍♂️ • Much thanks to @omnoireretreats for sponsoring today’s #askdemetria #ad
Demetria.
Just now on @msnbc talking about the potential fallout IF #jussiesmollett’s attack is deemed a hate crime hoax. It isn’t clear anymore if he was the victim of that attack in Chicago, but even IF he was not, I hope people will continue to extend compassion and support for victims/survivors of hate crimes, harassment, assault and other injustices. #msnbc
