Essaouira

June 2015

I have a photographer friend who has travelled pretty extensively throughout Africa. I ran into her at a photo exhibition for African Art in Brooklyn, and mentioned that I was travelling to Morocco soon. She said, “you must go to Essauria!” I hadn’t really planned on it. I saw mention of it in my research as a small fishing town that doubled as an escape from the craziness of Marrakech.

She was adamant, and because she tends to know what she’s talking about, I add Essauria to the itinerary. I visited five cities during my trip. It was my favorite.

I got up every morning to watch the fisherman carry out their duties in time-honored fashion and catch the sunrise. At the docks, it smelled like hell in some parts, but the views were heavenly.
