I have bad news: this will be my last Power recap. I’ve decided not to finish the season. To be frank: I don’t get advances of the show anymore from the network. And trying to scramble to watch and get them up in a timely fashion isn’t conducive to my schedule.
I have worse news (for some): I’m going to finish out this season of Queen Sugar, which has two more episodes, then I’m done with TV recaps (including on video) unless a network specifically engages me to cover their show. If there’s a particularly great TV Moment, I’ll write about it. Otherwise, I need to focus on other projects, including actual writing. I relaunched my site because I want to write-write. Recaps aren’t that for me.
So. That’s that.
On to the latest episode of Power:
Ghost is waiting with Kanan when Tommy pulls up in the most inconspicuous car ever. They can’t talk about killing the Jimenez Sibs on the phone, so they meet. Tommy says they have to kill the Sibs with haste or his boss, Jason, will kill all of them. Kanan’s ol’ messy self says maybe Tommy’s Dad can do it. Ghost is shocked to hear Old White is out of prison and warns Tommy not to tell Dad anything about their business. Tommy keeps saying his dad is good people. Ghost reminds him that his dad blackmailed him. No business is accomplished. Tommy rolls out.
Fiddy tells Ghost that Tommy was worried about his Dad, Old White, being a snitch. Ghost says it’s under control. Is it? Kanan suggests they kill Ghost’s dad. Ghost says no, he has a plan to separate Tommy from the mob.
At the Fed office, Black Donovan drops off the seized file about Officer Ray Ray to Angela, who shoves them in a locked cabinet. Donovan tells Angela that the Latino Sergeant (the one I’ve been calling a Detective) thinks she is up to something. Angela says they will never have to deal with her again, which means they will. She texts Tasha the case is shut down. I feel like this phone is going to get both of them in trouble someday. She also gets a text from her new Latino boo saying he’s been thinking about her.
There’s a meeting in the conference room. They’re trying to find the Jimenez Sibs. They’re going thru the distro, the Arturo guy who claimed he killed the Toros Loco Guy, but didn’t... I think.
Dre is on the phone at Truth when Sister Jimenez walks in. Dre says Brother Jimenez is a problem for the international business, mostly his tab is throwing off the accounting. Sis says she will handle and give instructions.
Old White goes to see the family. He gives a toast and thanks the family for standing by him, and his wife, and his son, Tommy. Tommy doesn’t look that moved. Across the room someone questions Old White’s release. New Boss says anyone he could snitch on is dead already. And dude did 25 years and said nothing.
Tasha is knocked out off sleeping pills when she should be getting ready for the investor’s party for the new building in Queens. She says she can’t go and play “perfect wife”. Ghost calls her “selfish”. Um... she just lost her daughter. Pipe down.
Ghost goes to the fundraiser alone, sweating and antsy and making demands. Tate sees Ghost being all weird and says he (Tate) will give a speech since Tasha isn’t there. #womp. Tate leaves to warm up some investors who are concerned about Ghost.
James finds himself on stage giving a speech and gets distracted when he thinks he sees Reina in the audience. Oh Dear. He gets flustered and runs after the kid, who obviously is not Reina because: dead. The investors are spooked by his behavior. He looks so sad and so alone. Dear God. Get this man some therapy. Instead, he gets drunk. All night.
It’s morning now, and he’s looking at a family photo that includes Reina when the house line rings. People Ghost’s age still have house phones? It’s the accounting firm that’s managing the fundraising for the building. They didn’t meet their goal last night and they want to delay the ground breaking. Ghost says “no”. Tasha comes in and asks how things went. He blames her for embarrassing himself. Sir? Ghost has always been a douche, but he’s extra douche-y right now. He needs a grief counselor.
Tate meets with Dre to ask him to be the face of the Queens Child Project. What is Tate’s obsession with having d-boys front his business. Dre doesn’t think James will be down—you think? He declines.
At the house, Tasha and her mom are cleaning the kitchen and Mom’s wig is super wiggy. Mom looks great tho. Tasha is complaining about Ghost. She says they’d figured out way to partner post-Angela, but she can’t deal anymore. She wants to start over. Mom asks if this has anything to do with the man (Terry) she was hugged up on at Reina’s funeral.
Turtle is making pancakes for his daughter when his recovering addict ex walks in. She says she wants joint custody. Turtle says never. He looks at some paperwork in his briefcase and texts James.
Turtle meets with Ghost to tell him about Tommy’s Dad being out. Ghost is pissed that it took so long. But he’s here now because Mock’s name is on Old White’s paperwork. He warns Ghost to tell Tommy not to let Old White in on anything that “would interest the Feds.” He points out that Old White already knows too much. Turtle says Ghost cannot slip up and be in anything illegal.
Tommy is at his dad’s house talking outside when Dad comes out. Tommy needs to “throw a party”, ie kill someone. Dad pushes for details but Tommy won’t give anything up.
Angela and one of her minions, the one who doesn’t GAF, have Arturo in an investigation room. He is the head of the Toros Locos. I’ve been confused about his position all this time. They want to know where the Jimenez Sibs are. He breaks so easily. He’s a horrible gang leader.
Tasha is at her new apartment. Terry is there. He warns her that Turtle’s hearing isn’t looking good and it’s best that she distance herself from Ghost.
Dre and Cristobal meet the Jimenez Sibs at the airport hanger. She wants Cristobal to operate books in the clubs. Tommy is watching. Dre and Cristobal drive off as the Feds pull up to arrest the Jimenez Sibs.
Back at the office, Angela is greeted with cheers and her boss is happy. Angela gets first crack to interrogate Sister Jimenez. She’s headed in when her Boy Toy appears and says, “nope!” He’s someone high up— not what he told her— and he has rank over her.
He goes in to interrogate Sister Jimenez, who is un-shook. She says the Feds can’t take them down because she and her Bro are “too big too fail”. His superiors say to let them both go. She’s like, let me, but keep my Bro. He’s like nope, you want to get rid of your Bro, you do it.
Boy Toy meets with Angela and her boss after the interrogation and says he can’t explain what happened because it’s above their pay grade. He tells Angela to focus on her other cases. Angela stay getting sonned at work, don’t she? Angela confronts Boy Toy later and accuses him of using her. He’s like, “ummm no. Slow your roll.” He says he was doing his job and he doesn't need her to do it.
In the car, leaving the Feds, Sis Jimenez is chastising her Bro for not telling her about a missing gun. Bro is so unbothered. He’s also high. This is breaking one of the Ten Crack Commandments. Wait. Is that only relevant to the sale of crack? Or it applies across the board? They argue over Dre. Bro is jealous.
Angela’s at her desk when Boy Toy texts her again that he can’t stop thinking about her. Um.. does he have any other lines? She ignores the text and pulls some paperwork. She finds a connection between Mock and Tommy’s Dad.
Dre and Cristobal are meeting in some abandoned part of Queens, I think. The Jimenez are putting things on hold. Cristobal is worried they have a rat and further, if Ghost and friends find out the Jimenez were brought in by the Feds, they will attack. Dre has an idea.
Turtle is at home with his daughter when the Feds come thru. The missing agent was last “seen” at his house so they want to search. And yes, they have a warrant. They’re going all up and thru the kitchen where the agent was killed.
Sergeant who was investigating Ray Ray brought in the IT guy who apparently was suspended for a misuse of his login. Why don’t I remember this? She asks who else knows his password.
James comes home to find his MIL buttoning up his remaining daughter, who is huge now. She asks if he’s been drinking. He leaves to go find Tasha who is cleaning out her closet. Tasha tells him he has to deal with Reina’s death. He looks so pained. Tasha says he left her a long time ago. Oh, and Tarik knows the truth about who they are. Ghost tries to reason with her and she says she wants out and needs space. He tries to down talk her about how she can’t do anything without him. I hate the way men do that. But Tasha knows her worth now. Or she’s just sick of Ghost’s shit forreal this time. She’s good and she’s out.
Kanan meets up with some kids who are going to do a drive by and gives them blanks. He just wants to scare whoever he’s shooting at.
Mock and the annoying white guy are walking together when Turtle confronts them about having his house searched.. Turtle threatens harassment charges. When he walks off, Mock explains Turtle is the key to Valdez, Ghost and Tommy and he’s just getting started. Oh Boy!
James meets with Tate, who has good news: Andre will be joining the team for the building project. This is how Dre saves his ass. Ghost can’t kill him if he’s involved. James is pissed. I just realized that Tate is the Clay Davis of this show.
Tommy and fam are leaving a bar in Queens and the knuckleheads Kanan hired are waiting for them. They decide to use real bullets. Awww, damn. They roll up and start shooting. Kanan runs out and "saves the day" by killing them. Unsurprisingly, the mob embraces him. Fiddy tells Vincent, the HIIC, the hit was a dope boy trying to even the score on Tommy. Vincent is unpleased with this news. Wait. I think Vincent thinks the two guys are the guys who killed the two young mob boys a couple episodes ago and dude lied to cover Tommy.
Mock calls Old White at home to ask what he’s learned about Tommy. So far, nothing. His wife overheard and makes him explain what’s happening. She knows he got out too quick. He admits he’s snitching on Tommy. She thinks the family will flip if they know he’s “a rat”. He says he only did it to spend time with her.
There’s a knock at the door. It’s a panicked Tommy coming to check that he’s ok. Tommy says he got shot at. Dad says let him help and tell him the truth.
At work, Lady Sergeant has a whole separate white board with info on Ray Ray. She is not giving up. At home, Tasha puts the family photo on the mantle. Ghost goes home to an empty house and calls Tommy about the new Dre problem. He walks over to the building plans on the table and the weight of the loneliness hit him. His phone rings. It’s someone asking to meet.
He sits alone in an empty diner. Damn he looks good. This beard is working for me. Angela appears. Here we go with Fitz and Olivia on Starz. Angie says she can’t stay long and she isn’t ok. He isn’t either. The waitress asks, “you two know what you want?”
Talk about a loaded question.
